It started way back in third grade
I used to sit beside Emmylou Hayes
A pink dress, a matching bow, and her ponytail.

She kissed me on the school bus, but told me not to tell
Next day I chased her around the playground
'Cross the monkey bars to the merry-go-round
And Emmylou got caught passing me a note.

Before the teacher took it up I read what she wrote:

Do you love me, do you want to be my friend
And if you do
Well then don't be afraid to take me by the hand
If you want to
I think this is how love goes
Check yes or no.

Now we're grown up and she's my wife
Still like two kids with stars in our eyes
Ain't much changed, I still chase Emmylou
Up and down the hall, around the bed in our room.

Last night I took her out in a white limousine
Twenty years together she still gets to me
Can't believe it's been that long ago
When we got started with just a little note.

Do you love me, do you want to be my friend
And if you do
Well then don't be afraid to take me by the hand
If you want to
I think this is how love goes
Check yes or no.

How many of you can remember those days back in grade school when we were beginning to really notice our little friends of the opposite sex as something other than just another player for hide and seek?  All of a sudden those little girls, in the eyes of the little boys, were beginning to look kinda pretty.   And the girls were taking quick glances at the boys and thinking . . . hmmm, he's kinda cute!  But of course, we couldn't tell them that.  It was much easier to pass a note during reading class, and hopefully they would check the right answer before passing the note back.  I guess this is how love goes.

I remember the first time I was kissed by a boy.  I think I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade when Richard came running up behind me and kissed me on the cheek before running away again.  Later that afternoon I was passed a note through a girlfriend during class.  It was from Richard, and he wanted to know if I would be his girlfriend.  Well, I really had to think about that, but I eventually wrote "Yes" on the paper and passed it back to him.  We were boyfriend/girlfriend for the next couple of days until I got a note from Dallas, and my "relationship" with Richard ended.  Dallas was now my new boyfriend.   I guess I was pretty fickle back in those days, but then I guess this is how love goes.
