"Happy Christmas (War Is Over)" was written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in their New York City hotel room at the end of the Vietnam war. They recorded the song during the evening of October 28 and into the morning of the 29th, 1971 at the Record Plant in New York. It was released in the United States for Christmas, but never made the charts. The next year it was released in the UK and made #4 on the charts. John was shot and killed three weeks before Christmas in 1980 and the song was re-released on December 20th of that year in the UK.
In the original song, the 4th line of verse #4 was written as 'The world is so wrong', and a final verse was written as follows:

War is over, over
If you want it
War is over
Now . . .

Today our war is not over, but hopefully it will be over before our next Christmas and our military men and women will all be home with their families.
