Our family had a very large gap
With a definite hole to fill
An empty space of honor and respect
To be filled with joy, delight and thrill.

And then someone perfect entered in
As a stranger to us all
He brought his charm and abiding traits
To captivate and enthrall.

His practical jokes and playful pranks
Keeps us all up on our toes
As we wait for the next mystery event
And the adventure that he chose.

As the Master Chef of us all
He serves his tasty cuisine
From Chicken Noodle Soup when we are ill
To his "Turkey on Fire" Supreme.

His compassion and love is spread to all
Through flowers and poetic word
While his toys and gifts magically appear
From the bags where they are stored.

His surprises appear in unlikely places
From the oven to the freezer cold,
Velveeta theft to Christmas gifts
That speak surprisingly loud and bold.

He carries with him many names
He is Vic by all who love him
He's Victor when he has crossed the line
And is called "Big Vic" by Uncle Jim.

This family was blessed when he arrived
And he can never be replaced
He is treasured and loved by all of us
And his presence we embrace.

Vic is my son-in-law, and the best son-in-law any mother-in-law could ask for. He has added so much to our family, and seemed to fit right in from the very beginning. Not only does he make my daughter very happy, he also brings amusing fun and pleasure to everyone in the family. His thoughtfulness, sensitivity and gentleness makes him a valuable asset to our family, and we were glad to welcome this South Dakota "Country Bumpkin".

"Country Bumpkin"
Recorded by Cal Smith
Words and Music by Don Wayne
Peaked Billboard position # 1 in 1974

He walked into the bar and parked his lanky frame upon a tall barstool
And with a long soft Southern drawl said,
"I'll just have a glass of anything that's cool"
A barroom girl with hard and knowing eyes slowly looked him up and down
And she thought "I wonder how on earth
That country bumpkin found his way to town."

She said "Hello, Country Bumpkin
How's the frost out on the pumpkin?
I've seen some sights but man, you're something
Where'd ya come from, Country Bumpkin?"

It was just a short year later in a bed of joy-filled tears, yet death-like pain
Into this wondrous world of many wonders, one more wonder came
That same woman's face was wrapped up
In a raptured look of love and tenderness
As she marveled at the soft and warm and cuddly boy-child feeding at her breast.

And she said "Hello, Country Bumpkin
Fresh as frost out on the pumpkin
I've seen some sights but babe, you're something
Mamma loves her Country Bumpkin."

Forty years of hard work later in a simple, quiet, peaceful country place
The heavy hand of time had not erased
The raptured wonder from the woman's face
She was lying on her deathbed knowing fully well her race was nearly run
But she softly smiled and looked into the sad eyes of her husband and her son.

And she said "So long, Country Bumpkin
The frost is gone now from on the pumpkin
I've seen some sights and life's been something
See you later, Country Bumpkin."

She said "So long, Country Bumpkin
The frost is gone now from on the pumpkin
I've seen some sights and life's been something".
