"Part One"

How many times have you wished to erase
Words you have said and things you have done
And how many times have you lived to regret
When your actions have hurt someone.

How many times have you sat down to grieve
The role and part you know you have played
And how many times do you recall and lament
Results of the decisions you've made.

How many times have you tried to make up
For the heartache and pain you’ve caused
And how many times have you tried to correct
Your self-recognized character flaws.

"Part Two"

How many times have you allowed someone to step
Upon your feelings and into your spirit
And how many times have you permitted mere words
To wound your soul whenever you hear them.

How many times have you had to repeat
The same lessons you have already learned
And how many times does it take to recognize
The very same steps that lead to getting burned.

How many times have you opened your heart
Only to let it be broken and shattered
And how many times have you poured out your soul
To realize your dreams never really mattered.

How many times have you allowed someone to hurt
The very essence of all that you are
And how many times can you forgive and forget
The hurt and pain; the wounds and the scars.

I'm sure we have all, at one time or another, experienced either Part One or Part Two of the above words.  We may be a father or mother who wishes we had done things differently with our children.  Or we may be a child who wishes our parents had done things differently with us.  We could be a husband or wife, current or ex, or maybe even a partner or a friend who wishes things had been done differently either way.

No matter where we fit into the above, these could all be experiences that pop into our minds and thoughts at one time or another.  When they do, the important thing to remember is that most of us try to do the best we can with what we know at the time.  For some of us it takes a little longer, maybe even years, before we finally learn and discover what we should have done a long time ago.

None of us can go back and redo the past, and beating ourselves up now will never fix any of what happened back then. We are all on a journey to discover who we are and where we going, and hopefully, on this journey we will continue to learn.

If we have played the role of "Part One", we can only remember the lessons we have learned so that we will always treat others with the same love and respect as we wish to be treated.  If we have played the role of "Part Two", we can only remember the lessons we have learned so that we treat ourselves with love and respect and not allow others to treat us any differently.

And we also have to remember that tomorrow will be brighter, and yesterday's gone.

"Lessons Learned"
Recorded by Carrie Underwood

There's some things that I regret
Some words I wish had gone unsaid
Some starts that had some bitter endings
Been some bad times I've been through
Damage I cannot undo
Some things I wish I could do all over again

But it don't really matter when life gets that much harder
It makes you that much stronger
Oh, some pages turned, some bridges burned
But there were lessons learned

And every tear that had to fall from my eyes
Everyday I wondered how I'd get through the night
And every change life has thrown me
I'm thankful for every break in my heart
I'm grateful for every scar
Some pages turned, some bridges burned
But there were lessons learned

There's mistakes that I have made
Some chances I just threw away
Some roads I never should've taken

Been some signs I didn't see
Hearts that I hurt needlessly
Some wounds that I wish I could have
One more chance to mend

But it don't make no difference
The past can't be rewritten
You get the life you're given
Oh, some pages turned, some bridges burned
But there were lessons learned

And every tear that had to fall from my eyes
Everyday I wondered how I'd get through the night
Every change life has thrown me
I'm thankful for every break in my heart
I'm grateful for every scar
Some pages turned, some bridges burned
But there were lessons learned

And all the things that break you
All the things that make you strong
You can't change the past cause it's gone
And you just gotta move on
Because it's all lessons learned
