Norman Rockwell's
 "Mirror"

Turn Around, turn around . . .
and she's a young girl going out of the door

Where are you going my little one, little one
Where are you going my baby, my own?
Where are you going my little one, little one
Where are you going my baby, my own

Turn around, and you're two,
Turn around, and you're four
Turn around and you're a young girl,
going out of the door.

(Slide show will start in a moment)

Where are you going my little one, little one
Where are you going my baby, my own?
Little dirndls and petticoats, where have you gone?
Where have you gone?

Turn around, and you're tiny,
Turn around, and you're grown,
Turn around, and you're a young wife,
with babes of your own.

When my oldest daughter turned 40 years old, the only thing I could say was, "How could she do this to me?". . .  for as she gets older, so do I!  Wasn't it just a few years ago that I brought her home from the hospital, frightened of her, in awe of her, very much in love with her, and responsible for her? This little life was being placed into my care, and I would have to help nurture her, cultivate her, and in the end, answer to the final outcome of her growth and development.

I can still remember this high-spirited little toddler who learned to walk long before she was supposed to, talked way too early, and had a mind of her own much, much too soon, but after a very few short years, she grew up and decided to marry. "Just graduate, just graduate first!" I pleaded, and she said she would.  But in the end, she got married and then came home from her honeymoon to attend her graduation ceremony . . . a mind of her own!

Then, as a newly-wed, she was moving to another state about 700 miles away with this brand new husband.  I can still recall the day they left. Their "old" 1953 Chevy pick-up, (this was in 1978, so it was "old"!) was so packed with wedding gifts and all her stuffed animals that she had to sit cross-legged on the front seat of the pick-up in lieu of all the "stuff" piled on the floor beneath her.  As she laughed and talk, so excited of her new life and adventures, all I could see was her lips moving while her whole life was flashing before my eyes.  I can remember thinking, "How can she be this happy when I am feeling so sad?" But, I did not say a word. I just smiled and watched as that young man drove away, taking my little girl with him.

And then, 2 years later, she did the unthinkable.  She made me a grandmother!  Why, I was much, much too young to be a grandmother, and with her just a baby herself!  But, she did it anyway . . . I think that was just a couple of years ago, wasn't it?  Well, that tiny little baby, my first grandson, is now in his first year of college; grandson number two is a senior in high school, and first granddaughter is a sophomore! How can this all be in such a few short years?

Well, in reality, this all happened a long time ago, and today she is still married to the thief (whom I love dearly) who stole my little baby girl right out of my arms, and she still has a mind of her own! She has grown up to become a very special young  woman, and one of whom I could not be more proud, and now it is her turn to say:

"Where are you going my little ones, little ones
Where are you going my babies, my own?"

I love you Teri. Happy Birthday!

I'm sure a lot of you moms and dads can relate, in one way or another, as your first child/daughter left home.  It is a very trying experience at first, but it does have it's rewards, that is until they start bumping you out of that "middle age" bracket, and that's when it becomes almost unforgivable! *smile*
