"LOST IN THE 50's and 60's AGAIN"

Each time we have a quarrel, it almost breaks my heart
Cause I am so afraid that we will have to part
Each night I ask the stars up above
Why must I be a teenager in love?

One day I feel so happy, next day I feel so sad
I guess I'll learn to take the good with the bad
Each night I ask the stars up above
Why must I be a teenager in love?

I cried a tear for nobody but you
I'll be a lonely one if you should say we're through.

Well if you want to make me cry, that won't be so hard to do
If you should say goodbye, I'll still go on loving you
Each night I ask the stars up above
Why must I be a teenager in love?

I cried a tear for nobody but you
I'll be a lonely one if you should say we're through.

Well if you want to make me cry, that won't be so hard to do
And if you should say goodbye, I'll still go on loving you
Each night I ask the stars up above
Why must I be a teenager in love?

Why must I be a teenager in love?
Why must I be a teenager in love?
Why must I be a teenager in love?

As a pre-teen, our social life was so simple.  Our social activities consisted of spending time with mom and dad, brother and sister, on the playground with our schoolmates, and our neighborhood friends.  Our neighborhood friends, the other kids on the block, were always the ones we had the most fun with, especially during the summer.  Right after "supper" we would all venture out to decide how we would spend the evening.  Do we play Annie-I-Over, Hopscotch, Captain May I, or Hide and Seek, which was always the most fun when it began to get dark.  Or, do we go visit our "adopted" grandpa who loved to tell us stories?  I think back then every neighborhood had this grandpa-type  person.

When I was growing up, we were lucky enough to have 2 "adopted" grandpas.  They were brothers and lived one block apart.  One told history-type stories, but always with a twist to make us laugh, while the other thrilled us and chilled us with "ghost" stories.  While we enjoyed them both, we often opted for the "ghost" story grandpa because his wife would always bring out treats after scolding her husband for "scaring us to death."

These carefree days were fun, but eventually the day we had all been waiting for finally arrived, the day we turned 13! . . . and became a teenager!!  From that day on, things were never the same.  Hormones were kicking in, the differences between boys and girls became much more evident, and we seemed to think the proper social status was to be "coupled up", "going with someone", or "going steady" - just being a teenager in love.  Little did we know that the next few years were going to put us on an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows . . . daily . . . everyday . . . all the time!

From hopscotch chalk to Hula Hoops
We bravely entered our teenage years
Left behind our dolls, toy cars and trucks
And packed away our "Mouseketeer" Ears.

Paul Anka
(Puppy Love)

While watching Grace Kelly in Dial M
He walked in and my heart skipped a beat
His hair was slicked back;  wearing a white t-shirt
Everyone called it "Puppy Love" from the moment we met.

We gassed up the car at 23 cents a gal.
Dragged up and down main; as happy as can be
Drove out to the lake to sit and talk
And then . . .  and . . . "Then He Kissed Me"

The Crystals
(Then He Kissed Me)

The Penguins
(Earth Angel)

Bobby Darin
(Dream Lover)

He called me his "Earth Angel"
As he had heard The Penguins sing
And I called him "Dream Lover"
When he asked me to wear his ring.

As the jukebox played at the soda shop
Teenage rock and roll dancers filled the room
We wanted a do-wop song to be our very own
So we picked the Crew Cuts and their hit "Sh-Boom"

Visit the Snack Bar for Something to Eat and Drink!

We snuggled up close at the drive-in show
Then he whispered in my ear soft and sweet,
"Put Your Head On My Shoulder" for just a little bit
Then we'll go to the snack bar to get us a treat."

Paul Anka
(Put Your Head On My Shoulder)

Fats Domino
(I'm Walking)

But the very next day we had a quarrel
I gave his ring back, and said good-bye
He turned and said, "I'm Walking" out the door
And remember . . . "Big Girls Don't Cry"

Four Seasons
(Big Girls Don't Cry)

Leslie Gore
(It's My Party)

Neil Sedaka
(Breaking Up Is Hard To Do)

Ray Charles
(Hit The Road Jack)

Well, I told him "It's My Party" and I'll cry if I want to
Because "Breaking Up is Hard to Do"
As he walked out of sight I said, "Hit the Road Jack"
Cause I can find another better than you!"

Little Anthony & The Imperials
(Tears On My Pillow)

Later that night as I tried to sleep
I left "Tears On My Pillow" as I asked the stars above
My heart is breaking, and I'd like to know
Tell me why, oh why, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?"

Frankie Lyman & The Teenagers
(Why Do Fools Fall In Love)

Marty Robbins
(White Sport Coat)

When he awoke the next morn, he thought,
"What do I do with my new "White Sport Coat"
The prom is tonight and I have no date
Should I call her now or just sit around and mope?"

Bobby Vinton
(Mr. Lonely)

Guy Mitchell
(Singing The Blues)

Brenda Lee
(I'm Sorry)

Well, he picked up the phone and gave me a call
He told me he was "Mr. Lonely" and "Singing the Blues"
So I told him, "I'm Sorry" and I want to make up
And I still want to go to the prom with you!"

We danced at the prom "In The Still of The Night"
He whispered, Darling,  "You Send Me"
I told him, "All I Have to Do is Dream of You"
And I know right where I always want to be.

The Everly Brothers
(Dream Of You)

Well, "My Boyfriend's Back" and I'm happy again
Tonight I'll sleep well beneath the moon above.
I often wonder who wrote the "Book of Love" for teens
About the never-ending saga of a "Teenager in Love"
