With the stock market crash in 1929, the 30's began
with the great depression causing massive unemployment
and poverty. The Dust Bowl followed in 1933
bringing with it a 7 year drought. The new
"Dick and Jane" books were teaching children
to read - "See Dick. See Dick run", and
parlor and board games became inexpensive
entertainment. The Monopoly game was created and
released in 1935 allowing people to buy and sell
property they didn't actually have. Big bands
and swing music brought some relief as people listened
to the music on their radios and danced to the
jubilant swing music. The music of the
30's reflected
a lot of the feelings and emotions people were feeling
at the time or were optimistically hoping for in the
future.

This recording was made by Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra
in New York on Feb 2, 1932
It don't mean a thing if you ain't got
that swing
It don't mean a thing, all you gotta do is swing
Makes no difference if it's sweet or hot
Give that rhythm everything you've got
Don't mean a thing!
