On a hill far away, stood an old rugged Cross
The emblem of suffering and shame
And I love that old Cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain

So I'll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true
Its shame and reproach gladly bear
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away
Where His glory forever I’ll share

So I'll cherish the old rugged Cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged Cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

"The Old Rugged Cross" was written in 1913 by George Bennard.  The song was written by the author in answer to a deep personal need in his life. After composing the song, Bennard became convinced that the cross was not merely a symbol of Christianity, but the very heart of it.  As a result, this is a hymn that grabs the heart of the singer with raw emotionalism and presents the truth of the Gospel story in terms every believer can appreciate.

"And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise."

Luke  23:43
King James Version

"The Old Rugged Cross"
Recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956
in the album "Hymns"
It made #2 on the Album Charts

The album was re-recorded in stereo in 1962 and re-released in 1962. It was on the billboard charts for 277 consecutive weeks.

Ernie Ford began singing "The Old Rugged Cross" at the age of four for family gatherings.  From 1956-1961, he had a half-hour television show, and ended each show with a hymn, which led to him recording over 400 gospel songs.

The music playing is a condensed version of "The Old Rugged Cross", and is for entertainment, educational and evaluation purposes only.
