A long, long time ago
On graduation day
You handed me your book
I signed this way:

"Roses are red, my love.
Violets are blue.
Sugar is sweet, my love.
But not as sweet as you."

We dated through high school.
And when the big day came,
I wrote into your book,
next to my name:

"Roses are red, my love.
Violets are blue.
Sugar is sweet, my love.
But not as sweet as you."

Then I went far away
And you found someone new
I read your letter dear
And I wrote back to you:

"Roses are red, my love.
Violets are blue.
Sugar is sweet, my love.
Good luck, may god bless you."

Is that your little girl?
She looks a lot like you.
Someday some boy will write

in her book, too.

"Roses are red, my love.
Violets are blue.
Sugar is sweet, my love.
But not as sweet as you."

"Memories from the Past"

The long years have passed since our teenage years
When we left our school days behind
But the nostalgic trip we took back home
Brought memories and thoughts racing through our mind.

It was a class reunion; a time to gather
A time to remember those days of olden
To see once again our very best friends
And to see how each life has unfolded.

I saw Janie, the cheerleader; Kay, the prom Queen
Johnnie, the class clown and Tom, the football star
Mary was there with her husband "Tall" Joe
I can still see them riding in his old jalopy car.

I watched as each entered the big crowded room
Hoping against hope to see my old steady beau
Then all of a sudden, I saw him walk in
He looked just the same, or at least I thought so.

He walked over to me with his wife on his arm
"I want you to meet an old friend of mine."
He introduced us both with a twinkle in his eye
"She was the girl who made my eyes shine."

His wife smiled and said, "I've wanted to meet you.
He's told me of all the fun things you did."
We laughed and we talked all through the night
Of the memories we had when we were just kids.

The reunion was over and it was time to fly back
I had lots of fun, but it was nice to be home
I still miss my old friends, and my old steady beau
And I enjoyed the chance to let my memories roam.

Although those years are past and time has moved on
I will always remember the words to this song:

"Roses are red, my love.
Violets are blue.
Sugar is sweet, my love.
But not as sweet as you."

"Roses are Red, My Love"
Recorded by Bobby Vinton
Written by Al Byron and Paul Evans
Peaked #1 on Charts in 1962

Bobby Vinton was born April 16, 1935 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania as an only child.  At the age of 16, he formed his first band and played in clubs around Pittsburgh.  He used the money he made to help finance his college education where he received a degree in musical composition.  His first hit single was "Roses Are Red", and it was 4 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts.

From 1975 - 1978 he had his own half-hour variety show on television, named "The Bobby Vinton Show".  He also starred in 2 movies with John Wayne.  He owned and performed at the Bobby Vinton Blue Velvet Theatre in Branson, Missouri until 2002 when the theatre was sold to David King, creator and producer of Spirit of the Dance. Vinton returns to Branson annually for limited engagements at the theatre, and continues to perform on tour.

Billboard Magazine called Bobby Vinton "the all-time most successful love singer of the Rock-Era".  From 1962 through 1972 he had more Billboard #1 hits than any other male vocalist, including Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

The music playing is a condensed version of "Rose Are Red, My Love", and is for entertainment, educational and evaluation purposes only.
