The 50's was the birth of rock and roll, bringing a bad influence upon the teenagers of the time (according to our parents).  It was totally indecent watching those teenage girls scream and cry in public over that disgraceful man (Elvis) moving and shaking his hips in such a disgusting manner!  The boys were greasing down their hair, carrying cigarettes rolled up in the sleeves of their white t-shirts, and their blue jeans were hanging down below their hips!  It's no wonder Boston banned that song "Wake Up Little Suzie" in 1957.  The lyrics were shameful!

We did scare our parents, didn't we?  Well, whether our parents believed it or not, we did listen to some music (maybe not a lot, but some) that wasn't classified as do-wop or rock and roll.  During those years other songs continued to hit the charts; such as country music, easy listening, a few "fun" songs, and even some of the big band music which was carried over from the 40's, and that's what this page is all about:

While rock and roll was here to stay
We weren't locked into the do-wop songs
Other popular songs made the charts
Proving to our parents that our taste in music
was not all wrong.

In 1950 Sammy Kaye was using
"Harbor Lights
" to lighten up the dark
And Teresa Brewer's "Music, Music, Music"
Came from a little girl singing from the heart

1951 brought "Because of You"
By Tony Bennett, my friend of goodwill
Patti Page singing "Tra la la"
Came from the song "Mocking Bird Hill"

In 1952, Hank Williams sang us a song
About "Kawliga" falling in love
And Jimmy Boyd saw "Mommy Kissing Santa Claus"
Under a mistletoe hanging above.

The Orioles were "Crying in the Chapel"
In the year of 1953
And Dean Martin sang about the moon in the sky
And a big pizza pie in "That's Amore"

In 1954 Don Cornell wanted to "Hold My Hand"
He said it was like the heaven above
Then Eddie Fisher paid honor to his father
With "Oh, My Papa"; the one he loved

In 1955 the Four Lads had "Moments To Remember"
From January to December's end
But Frank Sinatra's mind was on "Love & Marriage"
And it was impossible to separate them

In 1956 Sanford Clark gathered all his buddies
To drink to "The Fool", and he said, "The fool was me"
While Jim Lowe was knocking at the "Green Door"
Wondering what he would see

In 1957 Harry Bellafonte sang the "Banana Boat Song"
About picking bananas all the Day-O long
It was spring for Pat Boone, and she was his "April Love"
"Don't let her get away", he sang in the song

In 1958 Sheb Wooley saw a strange looking thing
It was a "Purple People Eater" with one horn and an eye
Conway Twitty was singing "It's Only Make Believe"
Asking for dreams to come true for this sad, lonely guy

As 1959 rolled around, Johnny Horton sang a lively song
Of the "Battle of New Orleans" to where the rabbits wouldn't go
The Browns told of "
Three Bells" ringing in a small valley town
And the life of Jimmy Brown and those who loved him so

So you can see our teenage years were more than just rock and roll
The swinging hips and greasy hair did not take the predicted toll

We listened to many songs; various songs that made the charts
Country, gospel, soft melodies, although rock and roll was always
first and foremost in our hearts!

"Those Oldies But Goodies"

Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you
The songs of the past bring back memories of you
I always remember the first night we met
The songs they were playing I never will forget.

I always will treasure them so close to my heart
They always will haunt me although we're apart
Each time that I hear them a tear's bound to fall
For I love those memories that I, I recall.

Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you
The songs of the past bring back memories of you
Forever they will haunt me but what can I do?
Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you.

"Yes, dear, they are playing our songs. And they will always remain our
songs. And each time you hear them, I hope you, too, will cherish the wonderful
memories that our love once knew. For these songs are just a symbol of the
love that I had for you."

Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you
The songs of the past bring back memories of you
Forever they will haunt me but what can I do?
Those oldies but goodies reminds me of you.
