A long time ago when the earth was green
There was more kinds of animals than you'd ever seen
They'd run around free when the earth was being born
But the loveliest of them all was the unicorn.

There was green alligators and long necked geese

Some humpty back camels and some chimpanzees

Some cats and rats and elephants but sure as you're born

The loveliest of all was the unicorn.

Now God seen some sinnin' and it gave Him pain
And He says, "Stand back!  I'm going to make it rain"
He says, "Hey, Brother Noah, I'll tell you what to do
Build me a floating zoo."

And take some of them green alligators and long necked geese

Some humpty back camels and some chimpanzees

Some cats and rats and elephants, but as sure as you're born

Don't you forget my unicorn.

Old Noah was there to answer the call
He finished up making the ark
Just as the rain started falling

n the He He marched in the animals two by two
And he called out as they went through:

"Hey Lord, I've got your green alligators and long necked geese

Some humpty back camels and some chimpanzees

Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn

I just can't see no unicorns."

Then Noah looked out through the driving rain
Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games
Kicking and splashing while the rain was pouring
Oh them silly unicorns!

There was green alligators and long necked geese

Some humpty back camels and some chimpanzees

Noah cried, "Close the door cause the rain is pouring
And we just can't wait for them old unicorns."

The ark started moving; it drifted with the tide

Them unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away
And that's why you've never seen a unicorn to this very day.

You'll see green alligators and long necked geese

Some humpty back camels and some chimpanzees

Some cats and rats and elephants, but as sure as you're born

You're never gonna see no unicorns.

('specially for Tracy, Lawrence, Jeremy and Haley)

"The Unicorn Song" by the Irish Rovers
Words & Music by Sheldon Alan "Shel" Silverstein
Recorded in 1967

The Irish Rovers, a Canadian Irish folk group, first began as a group called the Depression in 1963.  Will Miller, his brother George, George's friend Jimmy Ferguson and Will's cousin Joe were all a part of the originally group.  The group later moved to California and eventually began performing all over California.  Wilcil McDowell joined the band in 1966 and the following year they recorded "The Unicorn Song" which became a number 1 hit around the world.

The music playing is a condensed version of "The Unicorn Song", and is for entertainment, educational and evaluation purposes only. Titles have full copyright by their respective artists and record companies. Please show your support for the artists who gave us this great music by purchasing their CDs.

If you are interested in purchasing a full version of "The Unicorn Song" by The Irish Rovers, I have provided a link below to Amazon.com. They sell both new and used CDs. I have purchased many used CDs for my web pages and have never had a problem.  Amazon also sells MP3 downloads in several categories with single songs ranging from 89 to 99 cents.
