When you take this Sentimental Journey,
you will be traveling from North to South.

Your driver is waiting, so let's begin our Journey . . .

Our Sentimental Journey will take us to the streets of yesterday.
We'll visit the stores where we shopped and worked,
and the places where we played.

The journey starts from the north as we enter town,
and we'll wind down the streets heading southbound.

The time frame?
The years during the 50's!

Lakeview Drive-In
North of Mitchell on Hwy 37

The Drive-In was the place to go on hot summer nights.
We paid admission at the gate for the ones in the car.
But how many more were in the trunk?
"Shh!  Be Quiet!
We'll let you out after we pass the Snack Bar!"

Lake Mitchell
North of Mitchell on Hwy 37

We went there to swim, to fish, to boat and have fun.
And the July fireworks drew both the old & the young.

Palace City Drive-In
1501 North Main

A burger and shoestrings, maybe a malt or a Coke
was the next thing on the list to do.
A car hop would serve us with a tray in her hands,
and we'd honk the horn when we were through.

Mitchell Roller Dome
North Main

We practiced the waltz until we got it right,
and the great "Grand March" would signal
it was the end for the night.

Dairy Queen
1400 North Main

A banana split or a sundae with your choice of topping.
You can find it all at the Dairy Queen.
We didn't count calories way back then;
That was the advantage of being a teen!

Quality Chick Hatchery
1001 North Main

The Hatchery bought eggs from the farmers.
They were hatched into baby chicks,
and all the "would-be" hens,
were sold back to the farmers again!

Spratford's Market
923 North Main

In almost every small section of town
was the corner grocery store.
And most important was the penny candy,
and with all the choices, what more could a kid ask for?

Martinek Gas Station
900 North Main

We must get gas; give the car a fill.
But wait for the attendant to bring back change from your
Five Dollar Bill!

Our 50's car was just okay  if  backed against the wall.
But if we had that car today, we'd be the envy of them all!

Corn Palace & Mitchell Recreation Center
604 & 612 North Main

The famous Corn Palace and Corn Palace Week
With the carnival rides in the middle of the street.

The "Rec" was just next door and where all the teens met.
Some danced to the jukebox towards the back,
some played pool, while others just sat around to chat.

Mitchell Bowling Center
510 North Main

The Bowling Alley's close by, so let's try for a win.
We'll see how fast the boy in the back
 can re-set those pins!

Let's take a turn to the east on 5th Street;
then we'll come right back.
We can't miss this site or this Sentimental Journey
would certainly lack!

Mitchell Senior High School
400 East 5th

Basketball and football games; all the other sports;
Marching band, cheerleading team; different activity clubs;
The prom, homecoming game; honoring a King & Queen;
Vocal chorus, majorettes and graduation.

These are all reminders of those very special days
So let your mind flow, reflect on the past,
enjoy and let the memories raise.

Okay, we're back on Main Street, traveling South again.

Red Owl
406 North Main

We made a weekly shopping trip to the grocery store
to buy the week's necessities, and sometimes even more.

Our reward was the stamps we saved in a book.
To redeem for merchandise,
depending on how many books it took.

Clark's TV
402 North Main

In 1954 television finally made it's way!
We watched the Test Pattern while we waited,
and even though it was in black & white,
we couldn't have been more elated!
