This song expresses the words and sentiments that many parents, grandparents and others would like to convey to their children.  We all want our children and grandchildren to move ahead, to succeed, and to find happiness and fulfillment in their lives.  But at the same time, we hate to see them go; it is hard to let them fly away on their own.  They are so inexperienced, and so young.

They will always be the little boy or little girl we gingerly watched over.  Each time we look at them, we will remember the tears we wiped away, the laughter and giggles as we watched them play, and their innocence as we watched them sleep.  They will become adults, the next leaders of our world, and have children of their own, but to us they will always remain forever young.
