The People of today
just rant and rave.
They burn my symbol of freedom,
I just want to grab and shake them.
They have no sense of pride,
For your beauty you never denied.

Like my brothers before me,
I have fought to keep your colors free.
With every battle that we had won,
you were there to show who was number one.
When our brothers had died,
you caressed their bodies with pride.

We have our leaders to thank,
for allowing these people their prank.
To them it may be a cloth of colors,
to me it stands for freedom and honor.
We must ask our leaders to debate,
and change our flags fate.

My American Flag, this promise I give,
to hold you high and let you live.
My words to you are profound,
I'll keep your colors off the ground.
I will guard and protect your stars and stripes,
with all my power, might and life.

Today, more than ever, we need to be reminded of all that America stands for.  Our American flag is the greatest symbol we have in expressing exactly who we are.  Our flag represents our liberty, our freedom, our pride and our strength.

Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag in 1776, and the Continental Congress passed the first flag act in 1977.  It was resolved "that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes; alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

As new states were admitted to the union, Congress passed subsequent acts to change the flag.  Today the flag consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with 6 white.  The stripes represent the original 13 colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union.  The colors of the flag are symbolic as well:  Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, White symbolizes Purity and innocence and Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.

The American flag flies in many places here on earth and it was also standing tall on the moon in 1969.  We can see our American flag flying on government buildings, at schools, sports arenas, commercial businesses, and outside private homes.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if every American citizen had the American flag flying in the breeze outside their home?  What a breathtaking sight that would be.  We are in troubled times right now, and this would be a beautiful show of unity and support for our country and our brave military men and women who are currently serving our country.  As Johnny Cash is singing in the song that is being played right now, we are the flag waving, patriotic nephews (nieces) of our great Uncle Sam!

The flying of American flags at your home can be a symbol of your feelings for the history of the American flag, what it stands for, and that you personally hold the symbolism of American flags as an important part of your life.

"Song Of The Patriot"
Recorded by Johnny Cash with Marty Robbins

I'm a flag waving, patriotic nephew of my Uncle Sam
A rough riding fighting Yankee man
I love mom and apple pie
And the freedoms that we all enjoy across this beautiful land.

I work hard and I fight hard for the old Red, White, and Blue
And I'll die a whole lot harder if it comes to where I have to
I'm a flag waving patriotic nephew of my Uncle Sam
A rough riding fighting Yankee man.

And when I see old Glory waving
I think of all the brave men who have fought
and died for what is right and wrong
And when I see old Glory burning my blood begins to churning
And I could do some fighting of my own.

I don't believe in violence, I'm a God fearing man
But I'll stand up for my country just as long as I can stand
Cause I'm a flag waving, patriotic nephew of my Uncle Sam
A rough riding fighting Yankee man.

I'm a flag waving, patriotic nephew of my Uncle Sam
A rough riding fighting Yankee man
And I enjoy the liberty of being what
I want to be and achieving any goals that I can.

I was taught to turn the other cheek, but daddy used to say
Walk soft and pack a big stick, but never walk away
I'm a flag waving, patriotic nephew of my Uncle Sam
A rough riding fighting Yankee man.

And when I see old Glory waving
I think of all the brave men that have fought
and died for what is right and wrong
And when I see old Glory burning my blood begins to churning
And I could do some fighting of my own.

Cause I love all my brothers and we're proud of our group
We've got the greenest country here on God's green earth
I'm a flag waving, patriotic nephew of my Uncle Sam
A rough riding fighting Yankee man.
