After the 50's,
we saw another great change in popular music. We
were now "twisting" to the music when Chubby
Checkers taught us how to do the Twist. Some of
the Doo Wop music continued, but we began to see more
female groups, and beach and surfing music hit the
airwaves. Of course, Elvis
was still riding high, but he saw some competition when
the Beatles entered the scene, and Beatlemania began.
Poodle skirts
disappeared, and bell bottoms, mini-skirts and go-go
boots took over. The hippies created their own style of
fashion and fads with psychedelic colors, tie-dyed
t-shirts, love beads and the peace sign. Afros for
the boys (and some girls) came in style, and girls poufed up their hair in big
bouffants, that is unless they were of the hippie crowd,
and then it was long and straight (sometimes they even
ironed their hair!).
Below is a list of some
of the Hits for each year in the 60's. It is
not a complete list as I have
picked out only 10 songs for each year. I tried to
pick a selection of types of songs and artists. All songs are just samples of the original songs.
Note:
I have eliminated the hits for Elvis and the Beatles
since I have a page dedicated just to them and their #1
hits. Click
the link below to visit their page.
